Arkansas school board member officially resigns over anti-Gay post
by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Clint McCance, the school district member in Arkansas who came under fire for an anti-Gay post on a social networking site, formally submitted his resignation to the school board November 1, according to the Midland School District superintendent Dean Stanley.

The board unanimously voted at a special meeting to accept McCance's resignation, said Stanley. The media firestorm began when McCance, then vice president of the school district in Pleasant Plains, wrote on his personal Facebook page that he wanted Gay people to commit suicide.

McCance used the terms 'Queer' and 'fag' repeatedly, promised to disown his own children if they were Gay, and stated that he enjoys 'that fact that [Gay people] give each other AIDS and die.'

'I'm sorry I've hurt people with my comments,' McCance told CNN's Anderson Cooper on October 28. 'I'm sorry I made those ignorant comments and hurt people on a broad spectrum.'

Though he disapproves of homosexuality, McCance said, 'I give everyone a chance and try to love everyone.' His Facebook rant drew criticism from education officials in his district and at the state level. The Midland School District immediately denounced the posting.

The state Department of Education had said it was 'dismayed to see that a school board official would post something of this insensitive nature on a public forum like Facebook.'
