Jet City Hoops now registering players

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Jet City Hoops (JCH), Seattle's one and only LGBT basketball league, is currently registering both seasoned players and fresh meat alike for their upcoming 2010 season, beginning November 14 and going though the new year to February 27.

'It doesn't matter what your skill level is; if you register, you're guaranteed to play,' said Michael Coleman, co-founder of JCH. 'It's not like being in your grade school basketball team. You're guaranteed a spot.'

'We started with eight teams in our first year. & Last year, we had 14 teams,' said Coleman.

This year, it's likely that JCH will have an even larger amount of players and teams. JCH is already the third-largest LGBT basketball league in the nation.

Jet City Hoops is organized into two divisions: a recreational division for newer to mid-level players, and a competitive division for more advanced players. All divisions and teams are co-ed and open to everyone.

'We're registering for both,' Coleman told SGN.

Although JCH is only in its third year, they've already left an enormous impression on Gay sports in Seattle - not only with their sheer number of players, but also with their participation in this year's Gay Games, where they sent two teams and brought back a gold medal and a bronze medal, proving Seattle as a major player on the international Gay basketball scene.

JCH had never sent a team before, and though they left for the games as one of the newest leagues to participate, came home with medals.

According to Coleman, JCH sent both a recreational team and a 35+ team. Both teams were playing every day of the games, and the recreational team took the gold, while the 35+ team took the bronze.

'London took the gold, silver went to France. We beat them [France] the day earlier, but then they beat us in the very next tournament. Then we beat Boston for the bronze,' said Coleman.

'It was really just an exhilarating experience to be a part of over 9,000 athletes from around the world,' said Coleman. 'And to be representing Seattle in the Gay Games, it was just amazing.'

This year, JCH will be playing their games in a new location: the Miller Recreational Center (330 19th Ave. E) on Capitol Hill.

'Last year at SCCC, they did not allow us to bring fans in, so you couldn't bring your partner or your friends,' Coleman told SGN.

This year, however, they'll have bleachers available, so anyone can come watch.

Registration is open until Friday, October 22. To register, simply visit JCH's website at www.jetcityhoops.org and click on 'Fall Winter Registration.' There is no cap or limit on registration, and JCH will take everyone who signs up and put them on the court.
