Mexico City mayor threatens to sue Catholic cardinal over marriage claims

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Mexico City's Mayor Marcelo Ebrard threatened to sue Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez for slander if the cardinal does not apologize for remarks suggesting the mayor bribed Mexico's Supreme Court to rule that same-sex couples may adopt children.

The court ruled on August 16 that the adoption provision in Mexico City's same-sex marriage law was constitutional. The vote was 9-2.

In two earlier decisions, the court ruled 8-2 that same-sex marriage was constitutional, and 9-2 that all of Mexico's 31 states must recognize same-sex marriages performed in Mexico City, the only place in the country they are currently legal.

Opposition to the new marriage law was spearheaded by the Catholic Church.

Mayor Ebrard publicly demanded an apology on August 17 after the cardinal made inflammatory remarks about the court's decision.

In speaking of the mayor's relationship with Mexico's Supreme Court, the cardinal used a word that literally means to give feed to cattle, and is a colloquial term for bribery.

The court denied and condemned the accusation. Iniguez's office had no immediate comment.

Cardinal Iniguez had previously accused LGBT rights groups of manipulating the court in a "sneaky" way.

Mexico City was the first jurisdiction in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage. Argentina in the only Latin American country to have passed nationwide marriage equality legislation.

Ebrard and the majority of the Mexico City legislature are members of the leftist PRD (Party of the Democratic Revolution).

Mexico's president, Felipe Calderon, represents the rightist PAN (National Action Party), which is close to the Catholic Church.
