Lynch, Ferguson, Harris, same-sex couple get Emmy attention

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

A nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress-Comedy for Jane Lynch is no surprise - we saw it coming from the pilot episode over a year ago. But it's now official, thanks to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences voters who acknowledged her and several of her Glee colleagues with 19 nominations total for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards. A respected TV and film actress, who starred opposite Meryl Streep in 2009's Jule & Julia, Lynch recently married her longtime girlfriend.

The real shocker, and a delightful one to say the least, is a first-time nod for Chris Colfer, who plays openly Gay ensemble member Kurt Hummel in Glee, for Outstanding Supporting Actor-Comedy. The storyline of Colfer's character coming out to his dad earned Mike O'Malley a surprising Guest Actor-Comedy nomination as well, a sign that Emmy voters were pleased with the sincerity of the father-Gay son relationship.

For as many fans as there are for Glee ,you'll find about the same number cheering for Modern Family, which racked up 17 nominations for its debut season, including recognition for TV's funniest same-sex couple, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and co-star Eric Stonestreet for Outstanding Supporting Actor-Comedy - in real life, the former is Gay and the latter is straight and married. Joining them in the same category is a third cast member from the show, Ty Burrell.

Very out actor Neil Patrick Harris can add two more Emmy noms to his resume, grabbing one for his work as a hetero womanizer in How I Met Your Mother and another for his tough-guy-turned-rock-balladeer on Glee's "Dream On" episode.

Elsewhere, Gay-loved comedienne Kathy Griffin competes again in the Reality Series category, resurging actress Betty White was singled out for her guest stint on Saturday Night Live, and the sexually devious vampires on True Blood finally get to compete for Outstanding Drama Series.

The Emmy Awards will be televised on August 29.
