Snapshot Seattle focuses on LGBT community
by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

The Seattle LGBT Commission has launched a new website and online survey at www.snapshotseattle.com to assess the needs of the LGBT community in Seattle.

The Seattle Snapshot affords survey participants the opportunity to give the City of Seattle their opinions about how best the city can be for the LGBT community.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and, according to the LGBT Commission, will help to create an accurate snapshot of Seattle's LGBT community. The answers will be used to help inform policy makers, elected officials, and City departments about the specific needs of the community on a range of issues such as education, housing, health, public safety, and community involvement.

All information collected is confidential and does not contain information that could be used to identify anyone.

"We see this survey as an important step in addressing the needs of the LGBTQ community in Seattle," said Lillie Cridland, co-chair of the LGBT Commission. "The goal of the Seattle Snapshot is to get an accurate picture of how people are doing right now. With the feedback and data from the survey, we can figure out what's going on in the community and where we can partner with the City and other organizations to make improvements."

Christopher Peguero, co-chair of the Seattle LGBT Commission says that Seattle has always been on the forefront for promoting LGBT rights and that the Commission is pleased to have the support of the City Council in continuing to push Seattle forward. "The needs assessment will be a great tool for figuring out where there is still more work to be done and how we can work together to implement solutions," he said.

The Seattle LGBT Commission advises the mayor, City Council, and City departments about LGBT issues.

The Commission is hoping for a good survey turnout in order to get an accurate picture of the greater LGBT community at large. "Of course, the value of our data will be dictated by the participation of the community. The Commission wants to know how to make your life better where you live, work, and play," the Commission posted on their webpage.

According to the City of Seattle's official website, www.seattle.gov, Seattle has the third-largest percentage of LGBT residents among large cities in the U.S.

On June 21, the Seattle City Council passed a resolution reaffirming the City's commitment to full equal rights for all residents and employees regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The resolution also supports the work of the needs assessment, Snapshot Seattle, and requests that the Commission return to City Council next year with the results of the assessment and proposed strategies to address the needs identified.
