Gay City celebrates Re-Pulped anthology

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

On Friday, June 11, Gay City Health Project extended an invite to the community for a downtown rooftop garden terrace wine-tasting party to celebrate the upcoming release of Gay City: Volume 3 Re-Pulped - Gay City Health Project's third anthology of fiction, poetry, art, comics, and photography. This was the fifth annual wine-tasting Gay City has put on.

The idea behind the party at Continental Place (2125 First Ave.) was to get a taste of the fine wines while getting a taste of Gay City: Volume 3. Two short stories were read by their authors and photography was shared by one artist.

"Gay City anthologies produce vibrant, multi-disciplinary collections comprised of fiction, comics, poetry, photography, and art. Works are crafted to support and raise awareness of the Gay City Health Project mission: to promote the health of Gay and Bisexual men and prevent HIV infection by building community, fostering communication and nurturing self-esteem," Gay City Deputy Director Peter Jabin told SGN.

Local licensed "massage guy" and regular SGN contributor Eric Andrews-Katz shared a spicy south-of-the-border bondage-themed short story, local author and Gay City volunteer Ryan Crawford spun a short tale of a post-apocalyptic Seattle, and local artist Jack Johnston shared blown-up Polaroids of his days as a Gay punk rocker living in San Francisco in the late '70s.

All artists were introduced by Re-Pulped editor, Vincent Kovar.

According to Jabin, with Re-Pulped, Gay City attempts to revisit, renew, react, reshape, and reinterpret the Gay pulp genre of the '50s and '60s, raising the bar and making it relevant to modern issues.

Gay City board member Brad Mayer is marketing director for the national wine company Winebow. For the event, he brought in four wines from Italy: a champagne, a Pinot Grigio, a red mix of equal parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese, and a Sicilian red.

Food was donated by Robert Kohrt, a Gay City volunteer, and Robert Sondheim of Rosebud Restaurant and Bar and Grand Central Bakery.

Gay City: Volume 3 Re-Pulped is set to be released mid-July. Gay City will hold a free to attend official launch party, but the details are still in the works. You can pre-order Gay City: Volume 3 Re-Pulped by contacting Jabin at peter@gaycity.org. The book costs $20 and will be shipped direct to pre-ordering customers.
