posted Friday, April 2, 2010 - Volume 38 Issue 14 Arundhati Roy, Hamlet, Men's Chorus upcomingby Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer Arundhati Roy Mercy ate up Arundhati Roy's sold-out reading at Seattle Arts and Lectures, even though there had been a glitch about her ticket. The Booker Prize-winning novelist had a beautiful face, voice and presence. She was reading from her new non-fiction book, Field Notes for Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers, which she describes as a meditation about what democracy has become. Mercy liked Roy raising the question, "Is there life after democracy?" The author also said, "What we need today for the survival of the planet is long-term vision." Roy also read from a new article, Walking with the Comrades, about spending time with a movement resisting the forced displacement of indigenous people in India. She comments that the field they had been camping in was left with only a few ashes to mark how many people had been there. This led her to remark that the Maoists are "more Ghandian than any Ghandian. I'd write a play about them, "Ghandi Get Your Gun," but I'd probably be lynched." The audience agreed with Mercy's excitement. They gave her two standing ovations. Discussing Men's Chorus at Met broadcast of Hamlet The gang gathered for the Met broadcast of Hamlet. Kapacity said she has found a new delicious soprano, Marlis Peterson, who sang Ophelia on very short notice. Deliberation said he thinks this composer had better source material to work with than the composer of Turandot, with its unlikely twists. He has fallen in love with Simon Keenlyside, who sang Hamlet. Mercy and Cuteness agreed he was pretty hunky for a guy, and had a great voice. Mercy thinks it is cool that he is also singing Emile DeBec in Bartlett Sher's South Pacific. Cuteness wasn't crazy about how reductive the set was. Assonance decided the forgettable-ness of the music must explain why the opera is only done once in a hundred years. Loyalty, who sings with the Men's Chorus, was very excited about their concert of salsa coming up next week. He says the music is joyful and upbeat, and the band is great. Mercy found some more details. The name of the concert is Olé! Olé! Olé! It will be at McCaw Hall on April 10 and 11. Artistic Director Dennis Coleman and Assistant Artistic Director Eric Lane Barnes have teamed up with Eduardo Khawam, one of Seattle's leading local Latin LGBT directors and producers, to bring a colorful and authentic flair to the performances. This show has it all, and presents a vivid portrait of some of the best-loved Latin songs and dances with guest performances by some of the best Latin artists in the Pacific Northwest. Bailadores de Bronce will join Seattle Men's Chorus (SMC) on stage to accent select pieces, like the haunting song "La Llorona," with the intricate footwork that often defines traditional Mexican folkloric dance. La Gorda, the glamorous host from Latino Night at Neighbours and Gallerias, will accent the concerts with her own form of Latin spice, often described as "Cher mixed with a little Divine." Longtime chorus member/choreographer Christopher J. Anderson will infuse Latin movement and "sabor" into both large-scale production numbers that involve the full 260+ chorus members and some sexy sassy smaller numbers that involve fewer than a dozen chorus members. With songs by everyone from Selena to Santana, and titles that include "Besame Mucho" and "Livin' La Vida Loca," this concert is accessible and appealing to all audiences. Some songs are sung in Spanish, some in Portuguese, but most are performed in English - and ALL the songs will leave you shouting "más más más!" Don't miss this hot retrospective of the sounds and flavors of Latin America and Spain. With this musical travelogue, the Men's Chorus will visit countries like Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba, serenading you with zarzuelas, tangos, and salsas. Dance in the aisles to hits by contemporary Latin vocal artists like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Selena, Julio Iglesias, and Gloria Estefan. Enjoy performances by talented local folkloric dance and performance ensembles as we ignite McCaw Hall with the passion and emotion of Latin culture. Loyalty also said the men's and women's choruses will be singing together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of SMC in June. He is a little nervous that the women are already working on music he may find challenging. Mercy said, "Women always mature faster than men." Loyalty said, "That's a generous thought, expecting maturity at all. Will we get there in time?" Koch and Platt celebrate 20 years with "Flashback!" In celebration of 20 years together, Seattle sketch-comedy mavens Lisa Koch and Peggy Platt (Dos Fallopia) have unearthed some rare early sketches and songs for four nights only, April 15-18 at the Theatre Off Jackson. Koch and Platt have mined material from some of their first Seattle shows together (Cabaret de Paris, Theatre Off Jackson), including "The Ballad of Tonya and Nancy," "Martina! The Musical," "The Mamas and the Peter," "The Polka Dots," and more. Pianist/composer and longtime collaborator Bruce Hurlbut will join the duo. Voted "Local Treasures" (Seattle Times, 2009), Koch and Platt have collaborated as sketch-comedy partners since 1990, and have toured extensively as Dos Fallopia. |
