Dina Martina up to her twisted tricks at Re-bar

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

An Evening with Dina Martina Re-bar Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM Twisted and deranged drag queen Dina Martina is back, and we couldn't be happier. Dina recently debuted her new show An Evening with Dina Martina at Re-bar (1114 Howell Street) to an extremely devoted following that she left entertained, horrified, and sprinkled with 'jifts.'

Let me be perfectly honest with you: Dina Martina is brilliant. There is drag art and there is comedy, and in extreme cases, the two meet. Well, Dina is what happens when drag and comedy go out for a night of binge drinking and dose acid together, then put on makeup and bad wigs and sing songs. A Dina Martina show is the most fun you will ever have watching a train derail. Don't you dare look away!

Grady West, Dina's creator, is a master of song parody. An Evening with Dina Martina doesn't disappoint when it comes to the musical department. The show contains songs a la Dina from REM's "Night Swimming" to David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes." As one might expect, the lyrics have been seriously fucked with, but all of the songs are still recognizable, so through your laughter, you can't help but sing along (kind of) with Dina.

For her favorite part of the show, Dina gives out her famous gifts that she classically mispronounces as "jifts." Do yourself a favor and bring along a friend who's never been to a Dina show. If they are lucky enough - or, ahem, unlucky enough - they may be the lucky recipient of bologna-flavored lip balm, or a bag of glitter-covered poop.

The real treat? Dina's new videos. I can't bring myself to ruin the surprise for you, but you should know that no one is safe from Dina's humor. She messes with the Brady Bunch, Shirley Temple, and the sacred cow of Hollywood, "Gone with the Wind." Is it weird that I'd rather watch her versions of all of the above? Well, I promise you that you will feel exactly the same way as you leave Re-bar shaking your head and saying, "What the fuck did I just see?"

Speaking of Re-bar&.

Performing in a venue that, as Dina puts it, "has a floor like a pockmarked face" is a perfect fit. Dina, and her fans for that matter, are no strangers to Re-bar. The legend of Dina seems to live within the walls, even when the shockstress has long since left after curtain call. In other words, Dina and Re-bar go hand in unique hand. While it may be true that watching Dina shock and horrify the masses would be fun anywhere, the truth is it is best viewed from the comfort of the mix-and-match folding chairs and diner benches at Re-bar.

At $20 a ticket, the show is a steal. An Evening with Dina Martina is performed Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Additionally, Dina has announced Bloody Mary Mimosa Matinees on Sunday, 2 p.m. Be sure to get a ticket in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/93619, or you will have to pay $25 at the door.
