Mardi Gras
Debaucherade
February 16
The Cuff
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey of St. Joan kicked off their extended weekend of partying on Capitol Hill on February 12 with their Kiss-Off Valentine's bash at R Place. Afterwards, the Sisters donned face again for Saturday's Mardi Gras Debaucherade, which ran late into the night at the Cuff Complex. The Sisters returned to the Cuff once again on February 16 for their Fat Tuesday celebration. It was a weekend full of love, sex and porn stars designed to fundraise for Gay health programs.
"Saturday was the kiss - tonight is the fuck," Sister Stella Standing told SGN on Fat Tuesday.
Legions of men and boys came out in their most festive Mardi Gras attire on Fat Tuesday to party with the Sisters and Jason Sechrest, the owner of DV8 Casting, and three of his biggest (pun intended) stars: Rob Romoni, Spencer Whitman, and Jason Griffin.
Fans could have their photos taken with the stars - all three at the same time, if they desired! Many also received autographs as well as free movies and T-shirts.
Saturday's Mardi Gras party was certainly better attended than Tuesday's event, but that doesn't mean it was better. The more intimate feel of Fat Tuesday made all the difference, as did the Absolute doubles $4.75 drink special, which the Cuff offers every Tuesday.
A costume contest was scheduled for Tuesday's party, but thanks to the showy Spencer Whitman, a "Biggest Ahem" contest went down instead. The winner will be defending his title at next year's Fat Tuesday.
The Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday parties went to benefit the Foundation for Sex Positive Culture and The Sisters' Play Fair Project, and were sponsored by Steamworks, Hotel Max, DV8 Casting, and Channel 1 releasing.
According to Sister Stella Standing, the Cuff Complex asked the Sisters if they'd like to host the party. The Sisters jumped at a chance to throw a Queer Mardi Gras party and provided the Cuff with only one ultimatum in return: as always, they wanted to do it for charity.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are the epitome of never being too serious to have fun, taking on immensely weighty subjects like HIV/AIDS and turning their education, outreach and prevention into faux-theological, face-painted, over-the-top glamour.
The February 12 Kiss-Off at R Place featured naughty buttons, candygrams and a "Lashes" show hosted by the always stunning Lady Chablis. The party was a novice project for one of the Sisters, and went to benefit Gay City Health Project and the Sisters' Safer Sex Program. The novice project is one of many requirements for novice sisters before they can become fully professed.
According to Sister Stella Standing, after the post-holiday January lull, things are going to be very busy for the Sisters. Next week they'll be at Gay Bingo, which has a "Racy and Lacy" theme this month. "Then there's Easter, then Pride, then B.C. pride!" said Sister Stella.
