Seattle native speaks on nightmare in Haiti

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Haiti Relief Benefit
January 31, speakers 4-6 PM, concert 7-9 PM
Town Hall

Jesse Hagopian, a local social justice activist and laid-off Madison Middle School teacher from Seattle, was in Haiti with his wife, Sarah Wilhelm, an HIV/AIDS educator who works in the country, and their 1-year-old son when the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit. The couple will be telling their story at Town Hall on January 31.

On Tuesday, January 12, Hagopian was inside his hotel room at the Villa Creole hotel with his crying infant child. Trying desperately to calm him, Hagopian wasn't too happy about the fact that his wife, who generally kept a late schedule, would probably be working until the late evening.

By sheer luck, she arrived home early that day, much to Hagopian's relief - and even more so when the horrible natural disaster struck just minutes after her arrival at 4:53 p.m.

For the next five days, the young family's life became a gauntlet of giving first aid to earthquake victims and journeying through the body-filled rubble of Port-au-Prince. After five days, Jesse and his family were evacuated and have returned to Seattle.

In addition to speaking about his experience, Hagopian will also be speaking about what he calls "the occupation of Haiti" by United Nations and American troops, and the slow-going aid distribution process.

Also speaking at the event will be James Bible, president of the Seattle NAACP and Representative Jim McDermott (D-Wash.). Many other speakers and musicians are also scheduled. The speaker portion is free of charge, while the concert fundraiser has a suggested donation of $20, all of which will go to earthquake relief in Haiti.

The forum is sponsored by the Seattle International Socialist Organization. For more information visit www.seattleiso.org. To purchase tickets, visit www.townhallseattle.org.
