SCCC Triangle Club presents 'Speed Social'

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

On January 18, the Triangle Club at Seattle Central Community College put on a 'Speed Social,' a fundraising event for Lambert House. Hosted by local drag chanteuse Phoebe Fondue, the event, modeled on speed dating, raised $210 for Lambert House.

Fondue stood near the door and beckoned people in off the streets on top of her emcee duties. Altogether, the social brought in 25-30 people, who met and discussed various topics prepared for them on note cards. Each participant was also asked to describe themselves in one minute.

The Triangle Club at Seattle Central has gone through some changes over the last few quarters. They've moved from a three-chair structure to just a single chair, and have made it a club priority to put on fundraising events not just for themselves, but for their school and the LGBT community at large.

"To be honest, [the event] was really difficult. & I had to learn a lot of things along the way," said Jon Morada, chair of the Triangle Club at Seattle Central and primary organizer of the Speed Social. This was the first community event of this caliber that Morada has organized since he was elected.

"You've gotta do a lot of begging. A lot of it depends on people you know. You've gotta really network, and that's what I did," Morada told SGN.

Now, after the club's successful social, the Triangle Club and Morada have much more planned. More socials are in the works, including the upcoming "Punk Rock Prom," which will go to benefit Seattle Central Community College. Morada is already thinking about what he's going to do to get more support from local businesses for future events.

Morada, a Lambert House youth himself, went to the Lambert House regularly with Quyen Luu, the owner of Café Metropolitain. "He would always show me the ropes," said Morada, reminiscing about Luu. "I just reconnected with him this summer. We talked over the summer about doing something like this."

According to their website, the mission of the Triangle Club is "to establish a strong GLBTQ presence at SCCC; to provide outreach to not only our membership but the general student body in an effort to educate and support folks on the wide and varying nature of gender and sexuality issues."

The Triangle Club meets weekly on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. in the SCCC Student Leadership conference room. The club is open to all students of Seattle Central Community College.
