Gay City Re-Gift Project turns tacky gifts into vital funds |
by James Whitely -

You're going to keep that? No? Then give it to The Gay City Re-Gift Project. The Project is part of an ongoing media drive that raises funds for Gay City and their programs. Books, DVDs and CDs are at the core of the program, but they also accept games, toys, electronics, housewares and collectables.
Gay City's media drive started earlier this year with a spring-cleaning angle. The program, conceived of and managed by Alan Goldwasser, has been a complete success for Gay City Health Project.
"I took the idea to Gay City," said Goldwasser, who's been selling online for the better part of a decade and works primarily with Amazon.com.
"I wanted to do something that was really self-contained and wouldn't take staff time and resources," Goldwasser told SGN. "Gay City really needed something that was a revenue stream."
"It was a slow start, but events are very labor-intensive. [The media drive] is easy for them and hasn't taken staff and resources," said Goldwasser. This time around, the re-gifting project drew responses right away.
The re-gifting program will be going for another two months or so, but the media drive is ongoing, which means you can donate any time of the year. Any new or used items in original packaging are accepted. Drop sites include the Gay City administrative offices during the day and the Wellness Center during the evening., both are located at 511 E. Pike St. Gift pick-up can also be arranged.
"If you have some questions about the value of what you're donating & you'd be surprised," Goldwasser told SGN. Even the most inconsequential gift might have an impact on the health of the community around you.
For questions, or to organize a pick-up, contact Alan Goldwasser at mediadrive@gaycity.org or call (206) 579-8110.
