Wildrose celebrates 25 years - Here's to many more!!!
by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

Twenty-five years ago, Seattle experienced the snowiest and coldest November ever on record. As the December rains washed the 17.5 inches of snow away, the Wildrose swung open its doors, clearing the clouds and standing as a beacon to Seattle's Lesbian community, just as it still does today.

For Shelly Brothers, co-owner of the Wildrose, 25 years means a number of things, "It shows that the Gay community still needs Gay bars. Not many bars make it to 25 years, much less Gay bars," Brothers told SGN.

The Rose has had a string of owners since December of '85, but its purpose in the community has remained the same, and its status has only grown. Martha Manning and Shelly Brothers took over the space in September 2000 and remain the bar's owners today.

SGN met up with Shelly Brothers on the day of their 25-year anniversary party amidst the constructing of the block party, complete with the last-minute bustle of employees asking questions in a panic, a string of phone calls, and people stopping on the street just to say hello to the co-owner.

"We've been here for 25 years. & We try to cater to the entire community. The Wildrose is a safe place for women, and a safe place for everyone," said Brothers. "We try to be a place where all the segments of our community can gather."

The Wildrose holds fundraisers and a variety of club events regularly, and has established its position as a true community center. From "Micro Monday" to "Taco Tuesday" and Thursday's "Cheap Date Night," the Rose has found its niche here on Capitol Hill - 25 years of success proves it.

Over the last 25 years, the staff and patrons have made many memories in the walls of the Wildrose. For Brothers, the one that sticks out most was the election of Barack Obama.

"My most memorable moment would have to be election night, which I think could be said for most of the business owners on Capitol Hill," Brothers told SGN. "It was an amazing sight to see, all those people in the streets & and happy."

The Wildrose celebrated its 25th anniversary on December 30 and took over the block "pride-style." It was a night that won't soon be forgotten. When asked what the Rose meant to her, Brothers affectionately replied, "It means friends and family."

So here's to 25 more, Rose, from your friends at the SGN.
