New Voices 8 - a blast of musical humor at ACT
by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

New Voices 8
December 28
ACT Theatre

New Voices 8, the Contemporary Classics concert series focused on new musical theater songs, blasted off Monday night at ACT Theatre. It was sold-out, and the excitement in the audience was palpable. Some of the best musical theater talent in town was going to take stage. On stage with 30 of the musical theater performers was a real band, headed by R.J. Tancioco, with guitar, cello, drums and bass, and four backup singers.

Some of the songs were dramatic and moving, with highlights such as Ryah Nixon singing Please Dont Let Me Go by Scott Alan and Daniel Berryman singing Run Away With Me by Brian Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan. Keely Avery sang a duet with writer Thomas Dutton, who wrote Missing Piece with his brother Paul. The Duttons musical, Razias Shadow, has been picked up to be workshopped in New York after debuting in a workshop for Contemporary Classics called Showtune Suckapunch!

Many of the songs were funny, sung by some of our favorite humorists. Angie Louise sang about being in love with a punk rocker in Joey is a Punk Rocker by Joe Iconis. Kate Jaegar sang Im Not Pregnant by Katie Thompson to bring the first act to a raucous close. Other standouts in an evening of standouts include Nick DeSantis singing about unrequited love in Deli by Stephen Weiner and Glenn Slater, Don Darryl Rivera singing about being the Sensitive Male Best Friend by Jeff Thomson and Jordan Mann, Reba Buhr singing the Text Message Song by Drew Garbarini, and Jessica Skerritt singing about her Expectations of a Man by Jonathan Reid Gealt (and ending up with a woman).

The evening was capped off with a soaring performance of Reach the Sky by Bobby Cronin, as Brandon ONeill showed he could really fly with the backup singers. It was a fun evening of new music and talented performers.

The plan is to have New Voices 9 in the summer of 2010 and perhaps launch a production of a world-premiere musical, still to be announced. You can follow Contemporary Classics on Facebook or go to the New Voices 8 event at www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=189373393749.
