Boycott Manchester - Rally this Saturday
Equality California | http://www.eqca.org

It's been two years since Doug Manchester, owner of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, contributed $125,000 to anti-LGBT rights campaigners -- an early infusion of cash that paid for the signature-gathering drive that put Proposition 8 on the ballot. Members and supporters of San Diego's large LGBT community immediately called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel and, on July 10 of 2008, a coalition led by the San Diego LGBT community and the labor movement announced a formal boycott of the property.

Despite repeated requests to change locations, this weekend the American Historical Association will hold the first LGBT event at the Manchester Hyatt -- a forum on marriage.

Join us this Saturday for a rally outside the hotel during the event:

Equality California, Courage Campaign, Californians Against Hate, UNITE HERE International Union, the San Diego County Labor Council and many other LGBT and progressive organizations have endorsed the boycott, joined picket lines and attended rallies at the hotel.

Over the past eighteen months, the boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel has become a remarkably successful statement for marriage equality and a powerful example of the coalition between the LGBT movement and the labor movement. The boycott has already cost Doug Manchester over $7 million in lost convention revenue and shown clearly that there are consequences for those who attack the rights of minority groups, advocate discrimination and oppose the rights of workers.

The Hyatt Corporation has described Manchester's contributions to Proposition 8 as a personal choice and continues its partnership with Manchester despite their multimillion dollar LGBT marketing efforts.

Boycotts can be highly effective tools for advocates of social change. From Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott to Harvey Milk and the boycott of Coors Beer, history offers many examples of boycotts that forged new coalitions and advanced the cause of human rights.

Please, join us in renewing your commitment to the boycott and calling for equality.
