Firefighters = heat in 2010 calendar

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

The Washington State Council of Fire Fighters (WSCFF) Burn Foundation held a signing of their newly released 2010 firefighters calendar at Purr on December 16. Patrons got to mix and mingle with the firefighters, get their calendar autographed, and buy a T-shirt or wristband to support the WSCFF Burn Foundation. The firefighters calendar has become the single biggest fundraising project for the organization.

Every year since the calendar's inception in 1996, firefighters from around Washington State are selected to model for the upcoming year's edition. According to Rod Heivilin, WSCFF Burn Foundation executive director and creator, interested firefighters submit an application January through March. A number of models are chosen during an event in May. Individuals interested in modeling for the calendar are required to be a career firefighter, member of the IAFF, and commit to 60% of the organization's 60-70 fundraising events throughout the year. As Heivilin puts it, They have to do more than just be a pretty face.

All proceeds from calendar sales go to the WSCFF Burn Foundation. The organization, which began operating in 1987, provides funding for burn research programs as well as public burn prevention education projects. According to Heivilin, much of the research funded by the foundation has resulted in highly acclaimed and widely accepted changes in burn care. In addition to research and prevention programs, the WSCFF Burn Foundation makes it possible for several children with burn injuries to attend a week-long summer camp devoted to child burn survivors.

This year's calendar features 19 models, 15 men and four women. Each month has a different model (sometimes more than one) posed in their gear. Some models are wearing less than others, and they are always hot, hot, hot. A short bio accompanies each photo.

Calendars are available on the WSCFF Burn Foundation website, www.firefightercalendar.org, or over the phone by calling 1-800-847-6572. The 2010 calendar costs $13.95, or $25 for an autographed calendar.
