SGN PICKS - Best singles/tracks of the year, 2009 |
by Albert Rodriguez -
SGN A&E Writer
They may not have been played on a radio station near you, but these were the true standouts of 2009 and my picks for the best singles (in order).
1) 'Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)' - Beyoncé
We'll be dancing to this years from now. It was the bounciest hit with the right amount of sass, performed by R&B's unprecedented new queen.
2) '1901' - Phoenix
Could any other song make you a happier camper? I think not. Here's to repeat listens in the shower.
3) "Sleepyhead" - Passion Pit
Unusually dreamy, quirky yet clever, try getting this song out of your head after listening to it the first time.
4) "Die Slow" - HEALTH
Old-school industrial/new wave from LA techno wizards. It sounds like it was made in an abandoned, dark warehouse.
5) "Poker Face" - Lady GaGa
Sexually ambiguous and loaded with great hooks, not to mention questionable one-liners ("I'm bluffin' with my muffin"), this song is pure fun.
6) "People Are Crazy" - Billy Currington
With a chorus of "God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy" this quiet country ditty from an ex-Playgirl cover boy is candy to the ears.
7) "House of Flying Daggers" - Raekwon featuring Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and Method Man
It has a rather similar feel to Wu-Tang Clan's "Triumph," and that's a very good thing.
8) "Use Somebody" - Kings of Leon
The best rock ballad of the year from music's sexiest royalty.
9) "O...Saya" - A.R. Rahman and M.I.A.
Forget that tired Oscar-winning Bollywood number, listen to this one instead.
10) "Bad Romance" - Lady GaGa
Even if she can't pronounce French words correctly, The Fame Monster's late '09 single is way too catchy.
