Capitol Hill holds fundraiser for fallen officer

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

On December 9, 11 restaurants and bars on Capitol Hill will participate in a fundraiser to benefit the family of their neighborhood's respected police officer, Timothy Brenton.

All participating businesses - Bill's Off Broadway, Century Ballroom, The Elite, The Garage, The Honeyhole, Julia's on Broadway, Bluebird Coffee and Tea, Rosebud, Quinns, Vermillion, and The Cuff Complex - will contribute a portion of their total sales in an effort to raise money for Brenton's family.

According to Don Stevens, owner of Bill's Off Broadway and one of the organizers, a special bank account has been opened at Bank of America called the "Timothy Brenton Family Assistance Fund." The account will be active for a limited time and is available for private donations made by anyone who wishes to contribute. Also, at each participating location, customers can make additional cash donations in a "cash jar" on display for the cause.

"On October 31, Officer Brenton was on duty protecting the East Precinct when he was taken from his family and our community," Stevens said in a statement released to the press December 1. "In the days following officer Brenton's murder, there was a tremendous outpouring of emotion from many Seattleites. It was a shock to everyone that this could or would happen in our city."

Stevens says that over the years "the close-knit Capitol Hill community and merchants have experienced a resounding relationship with the East Precinct and the officers who patrol the neighborhood." In fact, Capitol Hill restaurant and bar operators frequently meet and talk candidly with local police officials to exchange ideas regarding safety and security. There is a close, mutual respect among them, Stevens said, that is "not easily found in other parts of the city."

As the Capitol Hill community learned more about Brenton, and the young family he left behind, the restaurant and bar owners were left questioning what they could do to help, he said. The loss that was shared by the entire community led the business owners to the decision to create a fundraising event.

Stevens says, "This is something we can do, ought to do and will do - it's really that simple."

Currently, 11 venues on the Hill have agreed to participate - a number Stevens hopes will grow in the days leading up to the fundraiser.
