CARA's Nat Turner Teach-in and Central Area
Community Festival
August 22
E. Cherry YWCA and
Garfield Community Center

Even though the days are winding down for summer, there are still things to see and do that are not only entertaining, but can get one thinking, too. Here are two events coming up this weekend that are certainly worth checking out.

As in years past, CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse) is putting on its annual Nat Turner Teach-in at the E. Cherry YWCA (located at 29th and Cherry in the Central District) on Saturday, August 22, 1-5 p.m.

The teach-in is specifically for people of color to learn more about strategizing for change in their communities and liberation efforts in other countries. It takes its name from Nat Turner, the slave who led a slave rebellion in 1831.

Included in the afternoon program are workshops on various topics aimed at empowering people of color.

The event is free and is will also offer light refreshment, though attendees can also bring a bag lunch to the workshops for after. For more information, visit www.cara-seattle.org.

If you're in the area for the teach-in and want some uplifting cultural fun, then shimmy on over to the Central Area Community Festival, which takes place on August 22.

The festival is part of Seafair, and brings together a variety of entertainment, from the Seafair Queens to various local musical artists like The Total Experience Gospel Choir with Reverend Pat Wright. There is also a delectable assortment of cultural food from the diverse community that makes the Central District home, and vendors selling jewelry, African art and clothing, and other items.

A number of city organizations also participate in the festival, including SPD, Seattle City Light, and a number of clinics like the Carolyn Downs Clinic. So, whether you only want to check out the festival, or both the festival and the teach-in, there's something for everyone to do this weekend.
