A Dyke About Town: Music Under the Streetlights

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Seattle Chamber Music Festival
Mercy and Cuteness met their friend Conciliation Curriculum at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival last Monday evening to listen to the music in the cool of the evening. Conciliation mentioned that pianist Peter Denk had received five standing ovations at the performance she has heard the previous Wednesday. Monday's concert included him on Brahms' "Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major, Op. 100" along with Stefan Jackiw. Denk's playing also knocked them out in that piece. Jackiw's violin sparkled, too. Joy Chamberflute told Mercy she had particularly picked out that concert for the Bartók Quintet for Piano and Strings with Soovin Kim, Erin Keefe, Richard O'Neill, Ronald Thomas, Adam Neiman. That did delight Mercy and Cuteness, too. Cuteness said the structure led her to admire each instrument in turn. Mercy thought it was beautiful music.

Mercy feels again that the move from Lakeside School to Benaroya Hall, next year will be a huge loss. Mercy thinks the Chamber Music Festival is going to have to re-name the outdoor portion from Music Under the Stars to Music Under the Streetlights.

Teatro Zinzanni
Mercy and Cuteness went to Teatro Zinzanni for their Pride Night. They were disappointed that more than a smattering of Gays and Lesbians didn't come. The show was delightful. Mercy loved the clowns, Les Petits Freres, with their incredible timing and physicality. Cuteness' favorite act was the acrobats, Vertical Tango. They both enjoyed Liliane Montevecchi's fine diva voice and presence. The food was delicious, but not as good as it had been on previous evenings Cuteness had been there. It was a very entertaining series of performances.

Slings and Arrows
Mercy has been showing Cuteness her DVDs of the Canadian TV series Slings and Arrows. Mercy likes the dark and satiric humor of the show set in a troop of Shakespearean actors. The series has romance, art, politics and lots of snappy dialog. Paul Gross has range as Geoffrey Tenant, an actor who had a nervous breakdown over his girlfriend, Ellen's betrayal. Martha Burns plays Ellen with lots of wit and passion. Stephen Oimette plays Oliver, the artistic director of the company, who slept with Ellen, but only because he wanted Geoffrey. Oliver was killed being hit by a ham truck, but came back as a ghost to counsel Geoffrey, when the latter is named in his place. This provides lots of comedy. Meanwhile, Mark McKinney plays Richard Smith-Jones, the general manager, whose eye on the organization's bottom line creates nice ironies.

Suasn Coynes, Bob Martin and Mark McKinney's script explores all the possibilities. Peter Wellington's direction has all the right details to create a fun small world.

Coming Up
Mercy and Cuteness are looking forward to Last Summer at Bluefish Cove at Woman Seeking& Theater West (www.womanseeking.org/west).
