THANK-YOU FROM THE DYKE MARCH
We recently read your article about the 2009 Dyke March. Given the lack of coverage of this event by mainstream media, we appreciate your space devoted to both the article and the color pictures accompanying it, and we are glad your reporter found the event fun. We would also like to provide a complete list of speakers and performers for readers who are interested in finding out more about the people in this year's lineup.
Sarah Luthens, the woman who spoke about marriage discrimination, was not a plaintiff in Washington's Gay marriage case, but was the Lambda Legal campaign coordinator for the marriage campaign and is a founder of LGBTQ Allyship. She and her partner are planning to be, but have not yet been, married in Iowa. Allena Gabosch is on the Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities.
Our keynote speaker, Luzviminda "Lulu" Carpenter, from Pinay sa Seattle, spoke about her group's work organizing Queer Filipina women here and abroad. Other speakers providing information about community organizing within the LGBT community and our various multiple identities included Quita St. John from the GLBT Bar Association Foundation of Washington (QLaw Foundation), Tamara Turner from Radical Women, Lisa Cohen from the Pacific Northwest Lesbian Archives, and Kristin Tucker of the Northwest Network. Our performers included Universal Women, 7 Star Kung Fu, the Giant Ass Drum Corps from Spokane, and Mel Watson as our headliner.
As a point of clarification, the Dykes on Bikes are not generally part of the Seattle Dyke March.
The Dyke March is run by an ad hoc volunteer committee that forms at the beginning of each year. Women interested in assisting with the organization of the 2010 Dyke March are encouraged to contact us through our website, www.seattledykemarch.com.
Sincerely,
The Organizers of the Dyke March
MANY THANKS FROM ARNALDO
What a phenomenal Pride Week! A great pride parade, two sold-out shows at Julia's On Broadway, and a great SGN review.
My special thanks to Julia's On Broadway, the Seattle Gay News, Bob Bruneau, Kenny Coulter, Doug Titus and Chuck Chestnut of Ethyl Car Club for providing the fabulous Spyder Corvaire convertible, Francina Noordhoek, my partner of eight years Steve MacFarlane, Wes Green and Jo Bryant, my dear friend Joe Farmer, Mariah Ybarra, Mary Ann Goto, my make-up mentor Aleksa Manila and my dear beautiful French maid volunteers Christelle, Roy, Carlos and Ming.
Most of all, thank you, Seattle for all your support for allowing me to do what I love to do without any artistic compromise.
Until the next cabaret!
Humbly,
Arnaldo, Drag Chanteuse
ELUSIVE HAPPINESS
Growing older isn't necessarily all that it's cracked up to be with the body rapidly disintegrating, friends passing, and the Gay world changing dramatically.
New faces, personal crises, and health issues still prevail, but too many people chasing discolored rainbows in their lives.
Happiness is so elusive. Yet a few Gay men do succeed as well as women willing to demonstrate their tenacity in surviving AS TIMES GO BY.
