Cast of HAIR to join march on Washington

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

The producers of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical announced July 13 they are canceling the show's October 11 performance so the entire cast can join the National Equality March in Washington, D.C.

The cast and producers made the evening announcement at a rally in Los Angeles and were joined by National Equality March organizer and LGBT icon Cleve Jones, Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and other prominent equality advocates. The entire company of HAIR had traveled from New York to California to appear on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien when they staged the spirited rally.

"The Public Theater has always aspired to make theater that matters, that speaks to the great social issues of our time," said artistic director of The Public Theater and producer of HAIR, Oskar Eustis. "HAIR has never been just a show; its message of change and hope and inclusion is one we try to live, not just preach."

He said this is the moment we need to recognize the right of all citizens, Gay and straight to have their love and their unions acknowledged by the state.

"We are proud to join with Cleve Jones and the National Equality March in support of Gay marriage," said Eustis. "Peace now! Equality now! Justice forever!"

In May, civil rights activist David Mixner called for a national march on Washington and asked prominent LGBT community leaders to execute and organize it. Days later in Fresno, CA, at a Prop. 8 protest rally, Cleve Jones stepped up to the podium and announced his commitment to Mixner's plea. Jones' new organization, Equality Across America, was born, along with its first mission: the National Equality March.

Between now and October, Equality Across America plan to develop grassroots leadership in all 435 congressional districts to ensure that the message is heard loud and clear by elected officials.

Cleve Jones told SGN last month that the National March on Washington this October will be a protest under the banner of equal rights for LGBT people. The first March on Washington was in October 1979. Now, exactly 30 years later, a new generation of LGBT equality activists will continue the fight. Jones said the movement will not quit until LGBT people are granted equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.
