Dennis Moyers cannabis patient and advocate will be missed

by Robert Christian - Special to the SGN

May 11, 2009, Mr. Dennis Moyers who served along with Hempfest in Seattle, and served on the 11th Legislative District Democratic party has passed away.

The Memorial Service for Dennis was June 6 at the Cross and Crown Lutheran Church.

Dennis was known for many things in life, from his personal battle with HIV to the war that raged against him. He was always there to lend an ear, understand people, and he made a difference in many lives.

During Dennis' time on earth, he was known and served on Washington state's Governor's advisory counsel on medical cannabis, and had recently started an online petition to be sent to President Obama for a medical cannabis liaison to serve on the federal and state level.

Dennis worked with Seattle Green Cross as one of its core members, and in doing so he became more and more willing to stand up and do something for the community.

While Dennis Moyers was involved in many groups, he always endeavored to do the right thing.

"The state has lost a dear friend in Mr. Moyers," stated James.

"Today we mourn the tragic loss of Dennis. Tomorrow we fight, and keep fighting," said Jim in Renton.

Local media outlets refused to air the story or mention Dennis or his legacy he left behind.

Many attempts were made, yet it was more newsworthy to talk about a bobblehead doll versus someone who was a true hero to many. This is sad, but the platform of which Dennis stood on is now in our hearts.

Dennis meant so many things to many people, but one thing is for sure: he served the people he loved.

The Office of the Governor sent a Washington State flag to Woody, Dennis' partner, and a personal letter to Woody and Leona, Dennis' mother.

Along with other guests at the memorial were Dr. Bouwers from High Line Community College, Dr. Jeff Schouten, representatives from the 11th Legislative District, and the community he served.
