Frolic, third annual Pride cabaret at Century Ballroom

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

Frolic, A Gay Cabaret
Oddfellow's Hall
June 19 and 26

Frolic, A Gay Cabaret, is a must-see for any dance, drag, and striptease fan. On June 26, the group of local entertainers will perform one last time at the Century Ballroom in the Oddfellow's Hall on Capitol Hill.

I went to the June 19 opening night of Frolic. The Century Ballroom is the perfect venue for such a show; there isn't a bad seat in the house, I was able to see every hip shake and dance step throughout the entire evening. Although you can buy a ticket for just the dance portion of Frolic ($25 at brownpapertickets.com), I highly recommend spending the extra money ($60) for the dinner, show, and dance lesson to complete your evening of total immersion into the world of cabaret.

Sipping wine while enjoying the dinner, an expertly prepared menu by chef Bo Maisano, was a wonderful way to begin the weekend. Chef Maisano's first-course dish, a spring green salad with poached peaches, marinated feta cheese, candied pecans and cherry balsamic vinaigrette was heavenly. The salad was the perfect serving size and infusion of flavor for a starter. The second course, pan-seared halibut over sautéed baby pea vine shoots, carrot coulis and toasted curry oil seemed as though it could melt in your mouth; a great summer dinner, not too heavy, and healthy, to boot. The last course, a dessert plate that includes a fresh cherry tart with an almond-vanilla pastry cream in a hamentashen cookie was the perfect ending to a pleasurable dining experience.

The show, hosted by Burlesque Starlet and Seattle legendary entertainer Miss Indigo Blue, was a high-energy romp through nearly every dance mold in existence. Dance numbers included a three-part striptease by Seattle's Little Blonde Bomb, Inga Ingénue, a spastic tribute to the 1980s by Lou Henry Hoover, and a number of jazz and salsa numbers by Century Ballroom dancers.

Hallie Kuperman, owner of the ballroom, made an appearance in three different dance scenes from opening the show with the Launchettes and dancing with the Salsa Girls, it was easy to see how she's led the charge that's made the Century Ballroom the renowned dance club it is today. Kuperman has been teaching dance since 1991, notably when she ran Swing Girls, an organization dedicated to teaching Gay, Lesbian, and non-homophobic people partner dancing.

One of the best performances of the night was a belly-dancing routine performed by Jesus, who managed to captivate the audience from beginning to end. Dressed in Middle Eastern attire and dancing with lit candles, Jesus was absolute poetry in motion. Every movement was a suggestive seduction in visual sexuality.

The trio Dance Belt, a group led by boylesque sensation Waxi Moon, delivered the standout performance. In a tribute to pop diva Beyonce, Dance Belt flawlessly performed choreography from the music video for the hit song Shoulda Put a Ring on It. It was the perfect way to end the show, a rousing applause from an audience whose hunger for good food, drink, and entertainment had been quenched.
