RuPaul's Champion pure magic
by Boy Mike - Special to the SGN

RuPaul is the fiercest and most recognized drag queen superstar the world has ever known. Champion is by far the best album the disco diva has ever released. People seem to forget that it was the music that started his career and he is back, baby, back to let the legendary children have it on his latest and greatest disc.

Ru enlisted the help of Lucian Paine, who comes from a musical theater background and has worked on Broadway hits such as Hairspray. RuPaul has a fabulous pop/dance sensibility and with the two collaborating in both the writing and producing, the result is pure magic.

The CD's opening track, "Main Event," would be right at home on a movie soundtrack such as Fame or Flashdance. It reminds me of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" from the Footloose soundtrack. The title track "Champion" is a battlecry for listeners to "always be a hero" and a reminder that "nobody wins by playing small."

"Tranny Chaser" is presented as an anthem to all of the "looky-loo" Tranny chasers that hit on gender-bending queens. The song is presented in cheerleader chant style similar to Toni Basil's "Mickey," only better.

With a wink and a knowing smile, Ru raps to a techno electronica beat in this track to "girls with something extra" in "Lady Boy."

Rounding out the album is a duet with the infamous Lady Bunny "Throw Ya Hands Up" which sounds like the next big HINRG hit from this amazing disc.
