The Seattle International Film Festival opens on May 21 with the gala screening of the political satire In the Loop at 7:00 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre. One of the Seattle's largest public parties of the year follows immediately after the screening. The following films of LGBT interest are scheduled for screening during the 24-day film extravaganza.
La Mission - USA - Drama
Rating: Very Good
May 30, 9 p.m., Egyptian Theatre
May 31, 1:45 p.m., Egyptian Theatre
This feature film drama tells the story of a Hispanic father named Che and his teenage son Jesse who live in the Mission District of San Francisco. Che works as a transit driver, was in prison earlier, and is a recovering alcoholic who restores classic cars as low-riders in his spare time. He's a proud man who has a well-known reputation in the Mission area community. Jesse is a senior in high school who plans on attending UCLA the following year. The plot centers around Che, his explosive but repressed anger, and his pride and how he deals with learning the truth about his son's sexuality. While we have seen many films dealing with this topic, this motion picture addresses the subject and the complexities of the characters in a realistic and believable way. The anger, embarrassment and disappointment of Che portrayed by Benjamin Bratt comes through, and both the positive and negative attributes and actions of this character are brilliantly exhibited. This is not just another father/son coming-out film. It's a SIFF film worth seeing!
Pop Star on Ice - USA - Documentary
Rating: Very Good
May 24, 6:45 p.m., Egyptian Theatre
June 5, 11:00 a.m., Kirkland Performance Center
This is a documentary profile film about the life and times of ice skating bad boy Johnny Weir. This flick uses contemporary and archival footage of icon Weir, interwoven with interviews of the people of influence in his life. The audience gets an opportunity to actually see this young man evolve from childhood through adolescence and into young adulthood, as well as being a witness to the unfolding drama of his skating career. What may interest audience members even more are the glimpses we are given into his personal life, his close relationship with his best friend and roommate, and how he addresses questions about his sexuality and gender-bending persona. It is a rare opportunity to view from the inside the private life of an Olympic skating star and worth the price of a ticket. Don't miss this one!
