Equal Rights Washington Celebrates Marriage Wins in Iowa and Vermont
We at Equal Rights Washington are joining our brothers and sisters in the states of Iowa and Vermont in celebrating their successes towards full equality. In Vermont, winning full marriage equality completely through the legislature is now a real possibility. Early this morning the Iowa Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision ending excl usion of gay and lesbian couples from full marriage rights. This is a transformative day for the civil rights of all gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Equal Rights Washington celebrates these successes and hopes to parlay these victories towards the same conclusions in this state.
"The brilliance of these wins can be felt by all of us working towards marriage equality. We know it takes these kinds of victories to perpetuate the movement. We are optimistic that the good people of Washington will recognize and aspire to providing the same kind of equality in this state as now enjoyed in Iowa, Connecticut, and Massachusetts - and depending on a successful veto-override campaign, Vermont," said Connie Watts, executive director of Equal Rights Washington.
