SEAMEC meeting this Saturday
SEAMEC meeting this Saturday
Since 1977, SEAMEC has been rating candidates in Seattle, King County, and statewide races on issues of importance to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered community. Our 2009 Annual Meeting will be held on March 14 at 3 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Library, 425 Harvard Ave. E., Seattle.

Please come and have a say on the direction SEAMEC will take throughout the year. Your presence is more important than your donations, but if you can't attend, please donate what you can (www.seamec.org or by mail to SEAMEC, 1122 E. Pike Street, Box # 901, Seattle, WA. 98122).

Steering Committee Elections will take place at this meeting and there are multiple board positions which are vacant and available for interested community members. The Steering Committee is the governing body of SEAMEC which produces the annual ratings and candidate endorsements. Service on the Steering Committee requires attendance at monthly meetings and ratings meetings twice annually, as well as serving on a working committee. It is a minimal time commitment of four to eight hours per month. There are both one and two year terms available. Recently, this committee has dwindled from nine people in 2007 to only a handful in 2009. We need your help to create the 2009 ratings!

From marriage equality and adoption rights, to hospital visitation and international visitation from HIV+ travelers, to Transgendered acceptance, we rate candidates on their positions to these issues and more. Candidates who are vocally hostile toward LGBT citizens, whether we're in their district or not, are rated 0. Those candidates that are vocally for our causes, defending the LGBT minority by advancing equality for all, receive a 5. Along this scale, most candidates will fall in varying degrees between these two extremes. SEAMEC presents those ratings in whole numbers between 0 and 5 and asks that you consider these ratings in addition to other issues and encourage you to vote for equality in all races.

Along with cutting the interview coordinator and judicial ratings in 2008, we also cut printing and delivery. For the 2008 Primary Election, we opted to move to a more environmentally friendly and cost effective all-digital release. We posted these ratings on our website, www.seamec.org, and sent a copy to our members via e-mail. The Seattle Gay News also donated by printing our ratings.

Ironically, the choice to save money with a digital release of our Primary Ratings meant we also didn't receive donations. At that time, there was an oversight where we didn't have an online donation method. To counter this financial offset, we mailed out our General Ratings, incurring costs we hoped to avoid while generating income we needed to survive. The donations we received from that, however, have only covered the cost of the mailing. Please get involved! SEAMEC needs your support!
