Reconsider, Obama
Reconsider, Obama
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Next month, not only will it be my 53rd birthday - yay me - but we'll also have in the White House our first black president, and with that penultimate achievement, a chance to right a lot of wrongs. Or, at least I, as one of the people who helped Mr. Barack Obama become President Barack Obama, hope so. I hope he remembers that we of the GBLTQ community put our money on the line and in some cases our shoe leather on the street to help get him into office. So, we hope the incredible gaffe of letting Rev. Rick Warren, a noted homophobe, lead the inaugural invocation won't be a sign of things to come. And personally, I'd like to think before January comes, President-elect Obama rethinks that choice and takes this as an opportunity to maybe give someone representative of the rest of us a chance. There are some very qualified and eloquent GBLT spiritual representatives out there, President-elect Obama, and some folks who, while not of our community, could be said to "be in the continuum." Think about it. After all, we're all watching you.

And this could be a way to get the ball rolling on some other wrongs to be righted, like the "don't ask/don't tell" law, or get more support for future Queer marriage initiatives, or help on GBLT issues in other countries, like Africa, for one.

After all, we are all hoping this president - more than our last huge mistake - will make choices that reflect a global perspective and bring everyone to the table, including the GBLTQ community. I, as an open-minded Aquarian (remember, it's my birthday next month, the same day as Ellen Degeneres and Angela Davis), am putting my money on this new guy. After all I did, literally put my money in the mail and sent it to this person because I believed I, as a citizen of this country, finally had a chance for representing all of me. The black part, the female part, the Trans part and everything in between. So, Mr. Obama, President-elect Obama, this is your shot, and I'm hoping you don't disappoint me and the thousands of other folks who took a chance on you, sending our small donations and giving you our trust. Start by changing the choice for who's speaking at your inauguration and work from there, and I'd say you'll do just fine.
