A Dyke About Town: What becomes of the brokenhearted
A Dyke About Town: What becomes of the brokenhearted
by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Mercy and Cuteness went to see Quantum of Solace. Cuteness said she thought Daniel Craig had a nice ass for a man. She liked the vitality of Olga Kurylenko's performance in the role of the love interest. She found Eva Green's work in the predecessor, Casino Royale, pasty-faced.

Mercy remembers reading all the Ian Fleming books when she was in junior high school because she was interested in the sex - albeit straight sex. She couldn't help noticing that Casino Royale had been considerably rewritten. She noticed there never was a Quantum of Solace among the original books. It turned out to be an Ian Fleming short story that she had missed, but which also bore little relationship to the movie.

Mercy went to Lisa Marshall's CD release concert and left with a big smile on her face. Her only disappointment was that the sound system at the Musiquarium didn't allow her to hear this artist's poetry.

Marshall is a Lesbian blues singer with a big voice. She credits Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin as influences. The singer delivers Janis' songs with great energy. Her gritty original blues also reminded Mercy of Joplin's. Marshall does a variety of covers as well as her own songs.

Mercy appreciated how out Marshall's lyrics are. The first words in "Swamp," the initial song on her album, are:

Love a woman, what's my crime / Hold your tongue your judgment time / If I'm living lift me up, I got my voice gonna raise it up.

And she does raise it up. Resonantly.

The second song, "Sooner or Later," deals with ending addiction so knowingly Mercy thought Marshall must have had that experience. The title song, "Simple," is a sweet love song.

Being with you it makes me strong / And weak at the same time.

The final song, "Got 2 See You," describes moving away from Virginia to California.

Where the people on the streets / Don't seem to care whose hand you hold now. In the dulcet rhythm of call-and-answer with her backup singers, Marshall does indeed do honor to Aretha Franklin. Her trio, the Dirty Girls, are strong harmonists and also each stood out in striking solos. Anne Leatherman gave a fresh take to "You've really Got a Hold on Me." Susan Apple joked about changing Sam Cooke into Samantha Cook then drove his "Havin' a Party" home. Becky Fallon made Mercy want to stand up and shout with her interpretation of Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted"

Also, check out Marshall's website at www.lisamarshallmusic.com to see where she is appearing and order her CD to put in your girlfriend's stocking. Mercy is planning on giving it to Cuteness. Shh!

Mercy has been reading Erin Dutton's Designed for Love. The Lesbian romance about an affair between a contractor and a realtor from different worlds satisfies the expectations of the genre. A large portion of the book is devoted to fun sex scenes. It could have used some editing to catch a few frustratingly ambiguous sentences.

Mercy and Cuteness went to see Mercy's longtime friend Annie Meyer's annual art show at her Studio 2507 at that address on Clinton Street in Portland. Meyer's paintings, prints and painting on ceramic are beautiful. Her subjects are colorful landscapes and knowing nudes. She is expanding into larger sizes and bright blue tones.

Cuteness had lived in Portland years ago, so enjoyed talking with Meyer and her partner, Silliness Drive, about a time, decades ago, when she had worked at Mountain Moving Café. She said her favorite shift was Sunday morning, because of the entertaining surprises about who would show up with whom after a hot Saturday night together.

Mercy is looking forward to seeing the Men's and Women's chorus concerts and Black Nativity.
