GSBA raises $250,000 for scholarships
GSBA raises $250,000 for scholarships
by Tim Peter - SGN Staff Writer

The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) recently raised a record $250,000 at its 10th annual Taste of GSBA dinner to raise scholarship funds for local GLBT youth. This year's theme was "French Connection," which included entertainment by Atomic Bombshells, a local burlesque troupe. The auctioneer for the event was Laura Michalek, a Seattle Lesbian.

"We did better this year than ever before, even with the difficult economy," said Louise Chernin, executive director. "That is because our community supports the scholarship program, and those of us who are getting by, even if we're not doing well, realize the need to support youth and non-profits. And our community does it well."

Chernin added that the event also showcases member restaurants and caterers. She said that 10 caterers prepared hors d'Suvre plates for guests during the silent auction.

Following the silent auction, chefs Christine Keff from Flying Fish and Tamara Murphy from BRASSA prepared a sit-down dinner. Chernin said they were also the first auction item, and that the winner had a special meal prepared by the chefs for his or her table.

Chernin noted that scholarships are still being accepted through the end of January. Anyone can go to www.thegsba.org and download an application. The scholarships will be awarded Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Westin hotel.
