Raynold Alan "Al" Vettling - 1936 - 2008
Raynold Alan "Al" Vettling - 1936 - 2008
You may remember Alan as the man who buzzed you with his electric larynx at many Seattle institutions such as Spags, Sonya's, Jade Pagoda, the Clock or (gasp) the Golden Crown. Al owned the original "Barge" at Northgate, home to many weekend parties "back in the day" when liquor sales were prohibited on Sunday. He opened his house to many roommates and often cooked a huge Thanksgiving meal for his "family of choice" and their friends. Alan liked to travel and made many memorable trips. He loved people and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. Alan really enjoyed gadgets and cars. Who can forget his talking Chrysler New Yorker, which would proclaim "a door is ajar" to which we would all crack up, answering back that a door is definitely not a jar?

Thank you to all the people who sent notes of encouragement or were able to visit him in his last days. Al is survived by his brother Duane, his wife Lonnie, and their daughter Amy, her husband Denny Zweber, daughter Kim, her husband Phil Luckart and their son Eric Vettling, son Chris, wife Leah Schultz, and great nieces and nephews. Al is also survived by his "family of choice": Richard Jarvis, Bryan Vaughn, Holly Hedges and many others. Alan was preceded in death by his mother Bonnie, father Raynold Alfred Vettling, and his dear friend Tommy Jeter. We all miss Alan deeply.

A commemoration will be held at Martins off Madison, 1413 14th Avenue, in Seattle on Saturday, November 8, from 2-5 p.m. If you knew Alan, you are welcome to join us in a celebration of his life.

In Alan's own words: "Be good to number one."
