William E. Woods, 1949 - 2008 |
A leader in the battle for our rights passed away recently. As his husband asked, the best memorial would be for others to become or stay involved in the battles for civil rights for all. If others pick up the cudgel, the battles are not lost.
Considered "the father of Hawaii's Gay rights movement," Woods came to Hawaii in 1969. He founded what is now the Gay and Lesbian Center and was its executive director for 17 years. He also founded and directed the Gay and Lesbian Education and Advocacy Foundation in 1990.
Woods was born on October 9, 1949, and grew up in Arthur, IL - a town of about 2,000 at the time, in a heavily Amish area. He is survived by his husband, Lance Bateman, mother Mary Blanche Woods, and brothers James and Robert.
