"Ooh La La! A May Day Spectacular" adds zing to Artwalk
by E. Joyce Glasgow - SGN A&E Writer

Seattleites flooded the Harbor Steps on 1st Avenue downtown for a whimsical, dreamlike, two-hour interactive extravaganza by artist Lucia Neare on May Day, corresponding with First Thursday Artwalk. The event was sponsored by 4 Culture's Site Specific Performance Network and GGLO. This well choreographed, elaborately costumed event seemed to involve at least 100 performers, including the Seattle Swing Club and lively music throughout performed by the Valse Café Orchestra. We were on what was called the "Queen May," where there were pink poodle girls, chefs with giant golden eggs, waiters, maids, deep sea divers, opera singers, a Marie Antoinette figure, little girls, giant walking pink layer cakes, oodles of white poodles, both giant and miniature, fully coifed with traditional pompom haircuts and remote controlled fake fur layer wedding cakes, which magically danced around the plaza. The audience enjoyed partner dancing as part of the experience.

The weather thankfully cooperated to help create a pleasant time. Performance artist, Lucia Neare sounds like a really eclectic character. On her website (www.lucianeare.org) she describes herself as "a Manhattan native and the daughter of a Gay fashion designer and a misguided heiress." She grew up in Carmel, California and has trained in western classical singing as well as the South Indian Karnactic classical vocal tradition. Among her many creative endeavors, she has sung for Orca whales through underwater speakers and has sung atop the pyramids at Teotihuacan, Mexico.
