Shrek The Musical
August 14 - September 21
5th Avenue Theatre
Everyone knows Shrek by this point. The two Shrek movies have taken box office records of various sorts. Now Dreamworks is making Shrek into a Broadway musical. The first theater that will host the musical will be the 5th Avenue Theatre, where there will be four weeks of preview performances before an official opening and two-week run.
Sunday, the public was invited to a free spotlight afternoon at the 5th, where the creators, book and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire, composer Jeanine Tesori, and director Jason Moore presented some songs potentially to be included for a world-premiere sneak peak. Those who got in (they stopped taking reservations after it got so popular that it was full) were given a unique opportunity to hear the creators talk about how the idea came about and how they got involved in the production. Lindsay-Abaire and Tesori even sang some songs, themselves. (There was much excusing of selves as they explained they were writers and not singers!)
Jason Moore was the director for Avenue Q, coming here in June with a Broadway touring show. Lindsay-Abaire is a well-known playwright who says he learned how to write lyrics for this show by going to a 10-day seminar. Tesori has composed for Broadway shows such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, where she worked with Sutton Foster. Foster, also cast in last year's Young Frankenstein Broadway-bound show, is cast as the adult Fiona.
One of the reasons Shrek was so successful as a movie was its ability to appeal to both children and their adult companions, many of whom would have to hear Shrek over and over and over again in the VCR. Translating that concept to Broadway is challenging. Given what we heard on Sunday, there will be a lot to like for both children and adults in the musical. The lyrics sound smart and funny and some the music is singable enough that you might leave the theater humming it.
Also appearing at the spotlight was Tony-nominated actor/singer, Christopher Sieber, who is cast as Lord Farquaad. Sieber is a pretty tall guy and he demonstrated how he would play Lord Farquaad in a contraption that will allow him to be on his knees. The creators are happy with Sieber in the role, since Lord Farquaad is a small man with "big man syndrome" and Sieber is having fun developing the part.
Subscribers to the 5th will have the first crack at buying extra tickets, which started this week. Single ticket sales won't be available until mid-June. From the looks of things, you might want to start counting your pennies and getting ready to jump on the phone. This could be a really fun show, and not just because it's riding on Shrek's big coattails.
