| Winter Ball comes to ECSA |

Special to the SGN
For big-league baseball, the term "Winter Ball" summons up images of Venezuela and hot days south of the border. For the Emerald City Softball Association, "Winter Ball" took the form of snow flurries during this Sunday's games played at Celebration Park in Federal Way. The short-lived snow flurries couldn't cool off the hot action as all teams played games this weekend, and division leaders began to emerge. A record 43 league games all took place on Sunday as action ran from 8 a.m. until almost 10 p.m.
The newly formed A division Knights had their first action of the year in league play and lost two tough games to B division competition in the form of the Pilots and the Vendetta. The hard-hitting Pilots scored early and finished with 15 runs to the Knights' 8, and running away with their first game of the year. The Vendetta team was also impressive with a 14-9 victory over the Knights. The Pilots then completed their day with a victory over B division rivals the Shock, to compile a 2 - 0 record, and the early season lead in their division.
The C division is still a jumble at the top with four teams with identical records. The Bulldogs, POCO, Thrusters and Maulers all stand tied with four wins and just one loss each. The POCO have their only loss to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs' only loss came against the Maulers. The Maulers' only loss is to the POCO. 'Round and 'round they go, this is a race that may go down to the wire as all teams are hunting for a coveted World Series berth this year. Thrusters saw some outstanding pitching by Brian K. holding the POCO to a single run, and pitching a shutout against the Toros, to lead the Thrusters to three wins this week. Elie H. was also outstanding this weekend with spectacular fielding and timely hitting including a key triple to left field with the bases loaded to rally Jerry's Kids past the Dragons by a final of 19-7, and keeping it close in a loss to the Alley Cats 8-7.
The open D division has three teams who remain unbeaten after two weeks of league action. The Rockets, Atomic and Saints all stand on top of the division with perfect 5 - 0 records. The Atomic won a tough game against the Drillers, to hand the Drillers their first loss of the season. The Drillers ace pitcher Rich A. took a hard hit to the face, and had to leave the game and the Atomic took advantage of their backup pitcher to take a narrow 2 run victory by a final of 10-8. Rich, always a tough competitor, returned in the Drillers' final two games to lead them to victories. The defending division champs the Rockets took all three of their games this weekend by more than 10 runs and look to again be the team to beat in the division. Duane E. of the Throttle came in and pitched three games for this weekend with little previous experience and did well. Other standouts in the D division included Brian V. of the X-treme, whose strong defense and aggressive base running helped them win two out of three games this week. Jason C. of the Wolves also had a great week with several highlight reel catches in deep left field.
