Donna Summer, Capitol Hill Block Party, Yoav, Pete Wentz, and Frightened Rabbit
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

This week's music news begins with a diva - a legendary one. Donna Summer, who penned an international Gay anthem with "Last Dance," announced a nationwide summer tour that includes a performance in Seattle on August 6. Two months ago, I spoke with the tour promoter about this particular show and answered some questions he had about concert venues. Summer is currently listed as playing Benaroya Hall, though I've confirmed it has been moved elsewhere. At press time, an official venue hadn't been announced yet and neither had ticket information. Check "The Music Lounge" or SGN's website in the days and weeks ahead for updates.

The Capitol Hill Block Party was also announced this week with Vampire Weekend, Les Savy Fav, United State of Electronica and The Hold Steady on the roster for July 25-26. I was told initially that the festival had been expanded to three days, yet it looks like it got scaled back to two. Personally, nobody on this lineup excites my interest. It pales in comparison to last year's bash featuring Silversun Pickups, Spoon and Against Me!. A surprise guest in a headlining spot is to be announced soon. If I sound slightly disappointed, it's because I am. I was expecting more. But heck, it's a party with cheap beer and it supports local businesses, so count me in.

New artist Yoav is my interview guest in "The Music Lounge" next week. The London-based musician, born in Israel and raised in South Africa, was scheduled to call me on Thursday afternoon to talk about his tour, his well-reviewed album Charmed & Strange, and going on the road with Tori Amos. Yoav's music is a mystical and dramatic mix of pop, folk, hip-hop and electronic beats, making him a rising star across the globe. Two of his videos, "Beautiful Lie" and "Club Thing," have gotten considerable attention on YouTube. Yoav performs at Seattle's High Dive on May 1. Look for an interview with this talented newcomer here on April 25.

Pete Wentz is going to be a daddy - and I'm not talking sugar. He's going to be a real daddy to Ashlee Simpson's child, confirming a rumor that was leaked to the media weeks ago. Wentz, lead singer of alt rock band Fall Out Boy, has openly admitted to making out with guys because, as he puts it, "anybody above the waist is fair game." Aside from kissing other boys, though he's straight (a different kind of straight, but that's all right), Wentz made headlines when images of his semi-erect penis surfaced on the internet - mistakenly released by an ex-girlfriend (what a bitch, love her!). He has a beautiful penis from what I've seen. I can think of a few places to put it, though Ashlee what's-her-name already thought of that.

Here's what I know about Neil Diamond: He's coming to Key Arena on September 24. Ticket information via Ticketmaster will be available very soon. Rock band Switches returns to Seattle on June 18, as part of the Nylon magazine tour with She Wants Revenge.

Finally, my CD pick this week is The Midnight Organ Fight by up-and-comers Frightened Rabbit. The album received an 8.1 rating by Pitchfork magazine, and is currently available as a download to purchase - it hits traditional record stores on April 29. I began listening to this band two months ago and haven't stopped. And I'll keep listening to them until they arrive in Seattle, which should be late summer or fall. Visit www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit to ear-sample tracks from the CD. I recommend listening to "Head Rolls Off," "Be Less Rude" and "Set You Free," and notice how the lead singer sounds a bit like Adam Duritz of Counting Crows - yet better. Frightened Rabbit is one of my favorite new artists of 2008.
