Anticipation gathers for Bumbershoot lineup
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

I'm a loser, baby. Those words shot Beck to fame in 1994, the chorus of his appropriately titled slacker anthem "Loser." And the great news for those of us Beck fans - and I admit to be a radical one - is that he's set to perform atBumbershoot along with Stone Temple Pilots, Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, M. Ward, The Walkmen, and Ingrid Michaelson. This is a slim portion of the lineup, so expect more top artists to be announced in the weeks ahead. Three-day passes are now available for $80 through August 15, and then jump to $100. Single-day tickets go on sale in July. Celebrating its 38th year, the Labor Day weekend festival at Seattle Center looks to be a highpoint of the 2008 summer concert season. Once again, Seattle Gay News will be on hand to bring you coverage of the event as it unfolds.

Back to Beck. He signed a poster for me backstage at the Paramount Theatre two years ago, a piece of memorabilia that I'll take to my surround sound-imbedded grave. After years of adoring his every move, I finally got to meet him. I still get giddy about it. And, it goes without saying - but I'll say it anyway - I absolutely cannot wait for Labor Day weekend to arrive!

Another show announcement made this week was Nine Inch Nails, scheduled to play Key Arena on July 26. The Grammy-winning group's appearance in Seattle is the second of their summer tour outing, arriving here direct from the Pemberton Festival. Ticket information wasn't available at press time, so check Ticketmaster or the band's website (www.nin.com) in the coming weeks for details. Grammy-winning trio Wolfmother was added to the Pemberton Festival, and you might recall drummer Myles Heskett's interview in "The Music Lounge" two years ago.

Already mentioned as a Bumbershoot headliner is Stone Temple Pilots. The '90s-launched quartet, led by the versatility talented Scott Weiland, will end the first leg of their summer-fall itinerary here in September. Behind huge hits like "Plush" and "Vasoline," STP established itself as a major player on the rock scene, selling over 35 million copies of their albums worldwide. Weiland, after years of unfortunate personal issues, formed Velvet Revolver. Now, he's back with STP. The band's reunion tour makes me a very, very happy camper because the last time I saw them in concert was on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University. I don't remember which year that was, though I remember my soon-to-be married friend John nailing a chick in the back seat of my Subaru Justy afterwards. Talk about a bumpy ride.

Singer-songwriter Joshua Radin has gone back into the recording studio to complete his sophomore project, Unclear Sky. Four tracks are already finished and available on iTunes. Radin shot to overnight success following rave acclaim, including a four-star review, of his debut We Were Here (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2006). The new album is being produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith) and will land in music stores soon. If you're a frequent reader of "The Music Lounge," you'll remember Radin sitting down to an interview with me before his CD ever came out. In fact, best friend Zach Braff rang his cell phone during that interview. Several months later, Radin and I are having beers at Neumos and I give him a fresh pair of Calvin Klein boxer briefs, which he slipped on the very next day. Straight boys go gaga over clean underwear.

In May, keep your ears out for a big concert announcement in Seattle that'll really have Gay men and drag queens cheering. I've been sworn to secrecy about this, promising neither to print nor blog any information pertaining to the concert because the tour promoter is still hammering out details. I'll have all the info right here in "The Music Lounge" in the coming weeks.

Finally, if you're sitting at home tonight with a pizza watching the Miss USA pageant, alternative rock band Finger Eleven is scheduled to perform their hit single "Paralyzer" on the televised program, which draws an enormous Gay viewership annually. Former N'Sync member Joey Fatone is a judge for the competition.
