Cal Anderson Park fountain vandalized |
by Nick Ardizzone -
SGN Staff Writer
Early Monday morning, the Seattle Parks Department observed vandalism at Cal Anderson Park, named for Washington's first openly Gay state legislator. The mound of the fountain had been indiscriminately splattered with multicolored paint, leaving large splotches of red, white, yellow and blue on the stonework and staining the water a dingy gray. Parks Department workers have said the paint is not water-soluble and will be very difficult to remove.
The Seattle Gay News sought a reaction from Tom Rasmussen, Seattle City Councilmember and Chair of the Parks Committee, who is currently awaiting an estimate on the damages from the Parks Department.
"I was really upset to see how much damage was caused to the sculpture of the fountain," Rasmussen told the SGN on Wednesday.
Rasmussen saw malice in the actions of the vandal or vandals. "It was more than a prank; it was vandalism," he said. "It's significant damage to public property. The perpetrators & wanted to harm [the fountain], they wanted to damage it and deface it."
Although Cal Anderson Park is partially built on top of the Lincoln Reservoir, any toxins in the paint would be unable to leach through to the water below.
