Farewell to a much-loved movie star: Heath Ledger, 1979-2008
Farewell to a much-loved movie star: Heath Ledger, 1979-2008
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

He broke our hearts with his moving performance in the Gay classic Brokeback Mountain, and this week our hearts were shattered again by the death of Heath Ledger. His portrayal of Queer cowboy Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's poignant drama earned the Australian-born actor his first and only Oscar nomination.

Brokeback Mountain elevated Ledger's exposure to mainstream film audiences, yet Gay moviegoers discovered his devilish charm early on in 10 Things I Hate About You, a contemporary spin on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew filmed in Seattle and Tacoma. Most recently, he appeared in the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There and this summer will be seen in the newest Batman installment, The Dark Knight, as The Joker.

At the age of 28, Heath Ledger barely capitalized on his potential. But in his short time, he helped to tell millions of movie fans that even in the most distant and remote places on earth, love between two men can be a beautiful thing.
