WALLA ON A SOLO
MISSION, INTERVIEW
NEXT MONTH
Death Cab for Cutie withdrawals? I've got your medicine. Next month, one Cutie will make an appearance right here in The Music Lounge. Chris Walla, guitarist of the Seattle-based quartet, is interviewing with me sometime around Valentine's Day. The musician is embarking on a solo side-project entitled Field Manual, scheduled for release on January 29. You can ear-sample tracks from the album by visiting www.myspace.com/chriswalla. When I met Walla in person, backstage at The Showbox (Market) a few years ago, it was on the evening that Death Cab for Cutie had received their first of three Grammy nominations. We celebrated with a giant hug, and I congratulated the entire band before they performed to a sold-out hometown crowd. I adored how talkative and open he was - a down-to-earth, cool guy. It was Walla who introduced me to the word "Gaycation," a term coined by he and his fellow Cuties referring to a Gay bar crawl when they're on tour. Anyways, stay glued for an upcoming interview with Chris Walla in the weeks ahead. This marks the second time Walla speaks directly to Seattle Gay News, the first being the exclusive feature in our "Best of Music 2005" issue.
SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO HEADED
TO NEUMOS IN LATE APRIL
Since we're talking about "Best of Music" issues, I have to mention Simian Mobile Disco. The London-based electronic duo offered themselves to Seattle Gay News for our year-end music spread last month, in the same way Death Cab for Cutie did two years ago. SMD's Jas Shaw, in the midst of a hectic schedule, planted his bum in front of a laptop computer and answered some questions for me. Yes, I agree: "Donuts" is a wonky answer to what he remembers most about Seattle, but hey, the dude was really busy. Plus, Seattle actually does have good donuts. Top Pot or Mighty O, anyone? Remind me to take a box of donuts to Shaw when he and James Ford, equal components of Simian Mobile Disco, come to Seattle on April 24. The show was just announced at Neumos and you can find ticket information on the venue's website (www.neumos.com). Attack Decay Sustain Release (SGN's Top 25 Albums/CDs, 2007) is the electrifying debut by Simian Mobile Disco, my newest favorite dance record to play at a party. Search "Sleep Deprivation" or "It's the Beat" (SGN's Top 10 Singles/Tracks, 2007) on YouTube to ear-sample the duo's music.
RADIOHEAD RELEASES
IN-STORE VERSION OF
NEW ALBUM
Happy New Year from Radiohead! The highly acclaimed trance-rock group provided fans with an online version of their latest disc in October, promising an in-store version on New Year's Day. They kept their word. In Rainbows came out January 1, and it's a beauty. Not quite OK Computer or Kid A, yet in its own little world - as we expect any Radiohead album to be. The best cuts are "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" and "Bodysnatcher." Commemorating the disc's official release, the band revealed the music video for "Nude" this week. It's weird. I got confused and dreamed about Pop Tarts just from watching it. I always get the munchies listening to Radiohead. Thom Yorke is perhaps the only geek I'd ever turn down at last call. But don't quote me on that. In Rainbows is available for purchase now at your favorite record store, and contrary to the online offer, you'll have to pay full price for it. No word yet on Radiohead tour dates, though I expect they'll journey to the US in 2008. Check out the thumbs-down version of "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" on YouTube, preferably with your favorite bottle of Merlot. You'll need it. This stuff is trippy. Brilliant, but trippy. On that note, let's love Radiohead together.
