Creepy Orphanage will keep you jumping
Creepy Orphanage will keep you jumping
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

I've always thought the creepiest places to set ghost stories were hospitals, nursing homes and old mansions. There's something about the feeling of suffering that often clings to those places that perfectly translates into stories about the supernatural. Believe me, you'll agree when you see new director Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage, which is set in an orphanage being renovated into a home by one of the girls who lived there as a child.

Sensitive and caring Laura (Belen Rueda), moves to the orphanage with her husband, Carlos (Fernando Cayo), and young son, Simon, hoping to reopen the dilapidated building to a new generation of orphans. Good intentions, but soon things start to go south, as young Simon starts talking about "friends," that his mom thinks are just the boy's overactive imagination. Unfortunately, not only is he not imagining things, but these "friends" have an agenda counter to what mom and dad want, and which set in motion a series of terrifying events.

Interestingly like earlier films, The Innocents, and The Others and also reminiscent of a story this writer intended to go on a gothic horror website, The Orphanage is chilling to the bone, and will leave the viewer with wide eyes and an open mouth at the twist ending. Take it from someone who writes gothic horror, this one will scare the pants off you and leave you with some very creepy feelings. And presented by the same guy who did Pan's Labyrinth, you can know this is topnotch stuff.
