| Midnight civil unions planned in NH |
There's a new reason to celebrate this New Year's Eve in New Hampshire.
On January 1, a civil unions bill takes effect which give same-sex couples the right to enter into civil unions which entitle the couple to all the same rights as a marriage. To celebrate the new law, an increasingly large group is planning to gather on the Statehouse steps at the stroke of midnight December 31 for a mass ceremony the first second of 2008.
"My partner and I have been talking about wanting to do it the minute it was possible, and where else do you celebrate those state accomplishments?" said Democratic state Rep. Gail Morrison. "It's a combination of very private dedication to one another, but within the context of a historic state event, so the Statehouse steps seemed absolutely the perfect place to be."
"It's the time to get together and celebrate our small victory," said former board member Jen Major.
Officials estimate between 3,000 and 4,000 couples will take advantage of the new civil unions in 2008 - nearly double the 1,704 unions performed in Vermont the first year it offered the ceremonies.
"The state of New Hampshire has taken a big stride toward addressing the painful legal void in which same-sex couples and their children live," said GLAD Executive Director Lee Swislow. "But the journey is not over until we have equality, until we have the same protections and choices as other New Hampshire citizens, until we have marriage."
