| Author of Gay Seattle to speak at Q-Squared Book Group |
Gary L. Atkins, author of Gay Seattle: Stories of Exile and Belonging, will conduct an informal question and answer session at the next meeting of the Q-Squared Book Group. The event will be on Saturday, December 15th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Branch Library, located at 425 Harvard Avenue East.
Gay Seattle: Stories of Exile and Belonging was originally published in 2003 and garnered local and national awards including the Washington State Book Award. Drawing on numerous original interviews as well as case studies of individuals and organizations, the book traces the last century of Gay history in Seattle.
In 1893, the Washington State legislature quietly began passing a set of laws that essentially made homosexuality - and eventually even the discussion of homosexuality - a crime. A century later Mike Lowry became the first governor of the state to address the annual Lesbian and Gay pride rally in Seattle. Gay Seattle traces the evolution of Seattle's Gay community in those 100 turbulent years, telling through a century of stories how Gays and Lesbians have sought to achieve a sense of belonging in Seattle. The author, Gary L. Atkins, is a professor of communication at Seattle University.
Q-Squared Book Group is open to anyone who is interested in gay literature and is actively seeking new members. Q-Squared is an organization whose mission is to improve the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health of sexual minority men by building a stronger sense of community, increasing individual responsibility, and improving self-esteem.
