Okay, I'll just say it right off the bat: The new action film Hitman (based on the video game franchise) is a lot like the Matt Damon vehicle The Bourne Ultimatum. A guy who's a human killing machine (exciting newcomer Timothy Olyphant) finds that the folks who trained him are out to get him, and thus a game of chase begins. There's a huge body count, lots of blood and a little hint a romance, only nothing happens in that department - so like the new Hollywood to leave out sex but pile on the violence, but that's another story.

Anyway, even though the plots are similar, there's still enough originality here that should keep anyone addicted to action films (like me, your writer here) interested. I also liked the subtle plotline that the Catholic church is the power behind this killer and a whole army of human killing machines, all of them given a barcode on the back of their heads instead of a name. And believe me, watching Olyphant - who looks like he just stepped out of GQ for the whole film, even after he's had a "kill's" blood spatter on him - walk away with the barcode on his bald head is a little chilling. Think Bladerunner with a lot more violence, and Rutger Hauer, but bald and more buff, and you get the picture.

There are also some dark comic moments in Hitman, like when a slinky Russian hooker who #47 (Olyphant) saves is trying to seduce our cold-blooded killer, and he puts her to sleep with something that resembles a taser. Mustn't let sex get in the way when there're still people after him and people he must kill, the scene seems to scream. Dark, but funny, trust me. Also, the whole Les Miserables cat-and-mouse chase between a dogged detective from Scotland Yard (Dougray Scott), and #47 is worth watching this film for. True, it's not Oscar material, but Hitman is a credit to the genre and very entertaining - just keep in mind it's pretty bloody, too.
