Yakima woman charged with shooting death of partner
Yakima woman charged with shooting death of partner
by Liz Meyer - SGN Staff Writer

A Yakima woma0n has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of her partner.

Tracy L. Johnson, 46, was arraigned yesterday in the death of 39-year-old Kelly Walsh. She remains in jail with bail set at $1 million.

Police found the body Thursday in the trunk of Walsh's 1966 Pontiac Bonneville parked outside the women's home. Walsh had been shot a number of times and had been dead at least several weeks, a police affidavit reports.

Detectives investigated Walsh's disappearance after her mother filed a missing person report. Police wrote that they found a .25-caliber gun and a notebook in which Johnson wrote that she loved Walsh but hated Walsh's father. She blamed him for making her violent. Johnson cried and wiped tears from her face Tuesday as she was arraigned on a murder charge.

Neighbors said the couple had been together for 10 to 15 years.

Sgt. Scott Levno with the Yakima Police Department said they had initially pressed for a first-degree murder charge in the case.

"We had our conversation with the prosecutor when Tracy was arrested, and we were suggesting a first-degree murder charge," said Sgt. Levno, "but you have to show some pre-meditation for that, and the prosecutor decided the best evidence we had was for second-degree."

Sgt. Levno added that while any murder in Yakima is out of the ordinary, his department sees an "overabundance" of gang-related murder, but stated that domestic-violence related murder is not as common in the area.
