Kurt Cobain biopic soundtrack is a gem; Elton John releases live double-disc DVD; Madonna tapped for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

R.E.M., Bowie, Gibbard pay tribute to Seattle legend Cobain on film soundtrack

Do I really have to say how important a role Kurt Cobain played in contemporary music? Sure, I do. The late great rock star, once a passerby in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, is one of the modern rock era's most noted icons. The man was a genius, a true musical poet who became a mouthpiece for a young, troubled generation. Cobain's childhood was spent in nearby Aberdeen and Olympia, though his musical aspirations brought him to the Emerald City. The rest is history. A new film based on the punk legend's life and career is scheduled to open exclusively at the Varsity Theatre (4329 University Way) on Friday, October 12. Kurt Cobain About a Son, directed by AJ Schnack, explores over 25 hours of never-before-heard interviews with the rock giant conducted by journalist Michael Azerrad, author of the book "Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana". At press time, I had not seen the film yet but was scheduled to attend an advance screening of it this week. As a diehard fan of Nirvana and Cobain, I planned to take lots of tissue.

The soundtrack for Kurt Cobain About a Son features a worthy roster of acclaimed musicians, many of them with Northwest roots. Death Cab for Cutie frontman Benjamin Gibbard contributes "Indian Summer", while Mudhoney adds "Touch Me I'm Sick" and the Melvins toss in "Eye Flys". Gibbard also duets with Steve Fisk on the opening cut "Overture". Among the big names on the disc, which includes 16 tracks and 5 audio excerpts, R.E.M. tributes Cobain with "New Orleans Instrumental No. 1", David Bowie sounds off with "The Man Who Sold the World", and Iggy Pop offers "The Passenger". Other artists on the CD include Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arlo Guthrie, Bad Brains, and former Screaming Trees member Mark Lanegan. The soundtrack is available in record stores now. If you're a Cobain fan, it belongs in your collection.

Sir John puts out live concert DVD recorded at Madison Square Garden

Did you miss Elton John's recent tour? It was an amazing show. From the fifth row, or somewhere near the fifth row, my friend and I sang, tapped our feet, and danced. Then we stormed the stage. Fellow Seattle Gay News writer Lorelei Quenzer attended the previous night's concert at Key Arena and gave the show equally high marks. If by chance you didn't attend, don't fret. Sir John has just released a two-disc live DVD recorded at Madison Square Garden on March 25, marking the singer-pianist-songwriter's 60th birthday. The DVD includes all 33 songs performed on the NYC set list, plus 18 rare and unseen videos. Among the track selections, "Take Me to the Pilot", "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "The Bitch is Back", "Crocodile Rock", "Daniel", "Bennie and the Jets", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", and an emotional finale of "Your Song". Guest appearances by Robin Williams and Whoopie Goldberg are also found on the recording, entitled Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden. The DVD coincides with the legend's forthcoming sold-out performance in London.

Madonna adds Hall of Fame inductee to career resume

Pop diva, multi Grammy winner, kabala follower, yoga enthusiast, author, mildly successful actress (yes, I'm being nice), top selling tour artist, mother of two, and one of the world's most visible Gay icons. Only Madonna can fit all of the above onto her personal and professional resume. She'll soon add Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee to her portfolio, as the nominees for music's top accolade were announced earlier this week. The Material Girl will join Beastie Boys, Donna Summer, Chic, Leonard Cohen, African Bambaataa, The Dave Clark Five, and The Ventures when the induction ceremony takes place next March at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Traditionally, a recognizable fellow artist honors each inductee with a unique, live performance that highlights the nominee's body of work or prominent single. Can you say Britney Spears warbling through "Like A Prayer"? Which reminds me, Britney could use a prayer herself.
