Yes the horrid weather, signaling to even the most die-hard 'summer enthusiast' that yes, summer is over and fall is here, but don't despair, there's a lot to be done inside. One of the things one can check out is all of the wonderful art exhibits both around the area, and outside the area. Here are a few notable ones to definitely not miss.
First, check out the galleries on the Hill, including the new one next to Purr (11th and Pine), which had the 'Even Bad People Need To Eat' exhibit on display, and the last time I was by, still had it on display. Provocative and fun, this one will cheer up muy pronto. And don't slack on wandering by to check out art at The Wild Rose, or at the Martin-Zambito gallery. Then, head downtown and check out the most eclectic collection of works by local artists in the area, at Art/Not Terminal, located at Westlake and Lenora (and they always have a cool party accompanying the opening on the first Saturday, so do go and hang out with the artists and their friends).
Also, there's new art in what used to be the gallery at Second and Union, now called Patricia Rovzar Gallery, where artist R.B. Sprague will have works on display through the end of the month. Then, if you want to travel further north, do stop by to have a cup of one of over a hundred different kinds of tea at Floating Leaves Tea House (located near the Ballard Farmer's Market, on Ballard Avenue). New work goes up the second Saturday of the month, when the Ballard Art Walk takes place, but for now, there's gorgeous art on display, including local ink paintings. Then stay a while, chat and have some tea and a pastry made by the owner.
Finally, do not miss the absolutely exquisite display of works by Cecilia Beaux, on display at the Tacoma Art Museum (1701 Pacific Avenue, South). Very reminiscent of works by Renoir and similar in texture to paintings by some of the Impressionist painters, Beaux's work is worth the trip, if only to view the way each painting takes care to present not only the subject's pose, but seems to capture a particular mood also. On display with the 'Gee's Bend: The Architecture of The Quilt Exhibit' (which must be seen to be fully appreciated!), the Cecilia Beaux exhibit will be up until January 6th, so get there now. Also, the museum store has items for sale, like the kind of gloves featured in some of the paintings and other knickknacks and tchotchkes, perfect if you're considering getting started early on that Christmas shopping. For more information on times for the show, call 253-272-4258, or go to ?www.TacomaArtMuseum.org.
