Okay, for those of you, who like me, don't have cable, there is actually something good to watch on the boob tube this fall season. Here are a few of my favorites, and I'm definitely looking forward to the October crop, which includes the new Hugh Jackman vehicle, 'Viva, Laughlin', and (if I can tear myself away from the new season of 'CSI: New York'), 'Pushing Daisies. In the mean time, check these out.
I completely heart the new cop drama set in New Orleans, 'K-Ville'. This show stars Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser as police officers in post-Katrina New Orleans. Using the aftermath of that disaster as a jumping off point, 'K-Ville' deals not only with day to day crimes intrinsic to the New Orleans oeuvre (housing shortages, a new crime wave in the wake of Katrina, and the like), but does a good job pointing up the racial divide in The Big Easy as well.
With major Black characters (there's a kick-ass female officer, besides Anderson, and Anderson's character is married, with a school aged daughter), and meaty themes, this show looks like a winner. Keeping fingers crossed that it stays on, because being on Fox, on Monday nights, it could have a very short life, but I hope not. On at nine p.m., you can still check out the new season of 'CSI: Miami', which introduced the fact that major character, 'Horatio Caine' has a son that he didn't know about. Worth watching, if only to see where the writers go with that new plot development.
Also liked the new vampire series, 'Moonlight'--though, yes, it is a lot like the old Joss Whedon series, 'Angel', in that our vamp is a crime fighter, which premiered on Friday, September 29th. 'Moonlight' does have a wrinkle that might be interesting, in that the vampire detective has a gal pal, who he saved from his ex (another vampire) when the girl was but a child. Could be exciting, but we'll see if it lives up to the phenomenon that 'Angel' was.
This show is on Friday nights, long the 'desolate wasteland' of TV viewing, at nine p.m., before 'Numbers', which kicked off last week too, with film star Val Kilmer playing a tasty baddie. It's also good to see that the writers brought back hunky FBI agent 'Colby', who apparently was really working for the good guys all along. The new season opener of 'Ghost Whisperer' also looks primed for a good season ahead.
Finally, NBC isn't impressing me with 'Chuck,' they're newest, which seems like a bad rip-off of 'Jake, 2.0'. Only watched about fifteen minutes of it before switching back over to FOX for 'K-Ville', but I don't think this will take me away from another show, 'The Big Bang Theory', which is so much better. Funny too, with great characters. Then, if you want yet another reality show to watch (when will they stop doing these and do good television again?), then do check out 'Kid Nation', which I watched last Wednesday, the 27th, and actually found appealing. I'm not sure pitting youngsters against each other, a la 'Survivor' is such a great idea, but the show is provocative and made me want to see what happens in the future. And from what I saw of 'Survivor: China' last Thursday, I'm impressed and will continue to let this be my favorite guilty pleasure for the foreseeable future. Now, if I can make time for 'Cane' I'll give you my thoughts in the next 'Lipstick and Lust' next week. Good viewing!
