IT'S A BOY!
IT'S A BOY!
Trygve Pedersen born in San Diego on Monday, August 27. One SGN observer quipped, "It's a boy, and a young Democrat!"

State Representative Jamie Pedersen and his partner, Eric, welcomed their first child into the world at the University of San Diego Hillcrest Medical Center on Monday, August 27, at 12:44 p.m. The baby boy, named Trygve (Tryg), weighed 8 pounds, 1/2 ounce and was 20 7/8" long.

The Seattle Gay News spoke with Jamie about the birth on Tuesday over the phone from the hospital. Jamie is one of five openly Gay state lawmakers serving in Olympia.

"We are just thrilled," he said. "He's a perfect little baby. We are just having a lot of fun."

The baby was born after a Cesarean section of the surrogate mother. The Pedersens waited in an adjacent operating room and were quickly united with their child. "As soon as he was born they brought him into that room and we were there when they weighed him and started cleaning him," said Jamie.

According to the attending physician, the baby scored 9.9 out of 10 during the Apgar check, which tests a baby's breathing, heartbeat, muscle tone, reflexes and appearance.

"Eric was so proud of his score," said Jamie. "The nurses and doctors come in every ten minutes and check in on him. He's been just doing all the things he's supposed to do."

The baby was released Wednesday to the Pedersens, who say they will remain in San Diego until September 6. However, they are eager to bring their son back to their Capitol Hill home in Seattle.

"We are looking forward to introducing him to our parents and getting some quiet time with him," said Jamie.

Jamie's parents live in Puyallup, Washington, and will be there to welcome the child. Eric's mom, who lives on the East Coast, will arrive shortly thereafter for a two week stay.

The Pedersens say they are grateful for all the support they have received, but request people respect their privacy while they spend some time with their newborn son and family.

Congratulations can be e-mailed to pedersen.jamie@leg.wa.gov or sent to his district office at 444 Ravenna Blvd., Ste. 106, Seattle, WA 98115.
